Thank you scarf

Thank you Scarf!

I love to make gift for friends and family rather than just buying something from shops, and when I do I try to buy local. Of course there is not always time for it but I try to make time to create something special with lots of love and care.

This time I needed to make a gift for my very good friend N… she is amazing woman – strong, warm, caring, giving, great mother and makes most amazing food (I always over eat in her house coz its tastes so good).

She helped me a lot during busy months of May and I wanted to thank her for all that she done for me and my boys.

I ordered yarn and decided to make a lacy scarf and after I couldn’t choose pattern on the web… I came up with my own pattern. First I showed  scarf to girls from Get hooked class … they loved it and ask to share pattern. So it’s been written and then tested (but if you find mistakes please let me know).

P.S. –  my friend love her new scarf!!

And now I’m sharing it with you… I’m sure you have someone special in your life … daughter, sister, mother, aunt, girlfriend… that you would like to make this scarf and say – Thank you for been part of my life xx … Oh dear! It sounds like TV ad)))) … at least I’m not trying to sell you stuff))))

Enjoy!

Mahala Mandala crochet square

Hello!

Its me again with free pattern / photo tutorial.

This time I would like to share with you crochet Mandala that I made last summer but it was put away in one of my many baskets and forgotten((((( . Because I can be very disorganized… not sure if its part of being creative person or is it just one of my character minuses or pluses (depending how you relate to chaos)))) So few months ago while browsing through my stash…ta da I found it!!!

I quickly pulled out Vinnis cottons, made few different color combinations… the flower shape of this motif can create awesome summer shawl, can be used as applique or table runner/coasters… and many other pretty things!

Then I decided that it will look great as a square motif, so I  re designed it and now it can be used in many different strait and square ways – blankets, cushion, vests, tops, bags… you know what I mean;)

Yuli

So here it is Mahala Mandala! I love how its sounds and also because in South African slang – mahala – means for free or for nothing and gratis – just like this pattern!

 ~ Mahala Mandala  crochet square ~

You will need

~ DK yarn or any other yarn of your choice (I used Nikkim cotton “Vinnies Colors”) 6 colors of your choice;

~ 4 mm hook;

~ tapestry needle

~ scissor

Abbreviation

This pattern uses American Standard Abbreviations

  • ch – chain;
  • sc – single crochet;
  • hdc – half double crochet;
  • dc – double crochet;
  • hdcsp – half double crochet spike; see Note.
  • st – stitch;
  • sl.st. – slp stitch;
  • rep – repeat;

Note:

sc rounds – 1 chains in the beginning of every row counts as a sc. Finish each round with 1 sl. st. in 1st sc from beginning of this round.

hdc and dc rounds – 3 chains in the beginning of every row counts as a dc.  Finish each round with 1 sl. st. in 3rd ch from beginning of this round.

“Spikes” are made by inserting the hook further down into the fabric than usual, either below the next stitch or to one side of it. A loop is draw through and up to the height of the current row; stitch completed normally.

Spikes tip – its important to work “spikes” loops loosely enough to avoid squashing the fabric, but with sufficient tension to maintain the stability of the fabric.

1st round – Color A – into magicloop – 3ch, 11hdc. Total = 12 st.

Joining squares as you go with 8th round – replacing every 2nd ch (middle ch of 3 ch group from round  8) with sl. st and sl. st it into 3 ch space of another finished square.

I hope my pattern and drawings are clear and easy to understand:)

And please share with me what you planning to do with Mahala Mandala squares! Would love to see it.

I must say that I’m still not sure what will it be… summer shawl or throw, so I just keep making more and more squares and will decide later;)

Flower Motif Scarf

Few weeks ago I bumped into my friend and she told me that she was looking around for colorfull crochet scarf for her friend’s bday. After quick chat we agreed to exchange pics/ideas over email and I said that I’ll look for pattern in my web stash.

I checked my own pattern stash, then I surf web and of course good place for pattern searching – Ravelry;) There I found perfect match … it was hiding in my favorites ~ Free Motif Scarf by Pierrot Yarns ~

motif scarf

This one thanslated in English, but if you can read crochet diargams it doen’t mater what language it is;) This is why I love japanies patterns ~ simple, clear & detailed!

My friend loved floer scarf pattern and asked me  if I could make it for her friend.  Oh Yes, perfect fix for crochet addict – new pattern, colorful yarn and I get paid for this pleasure!!!

I send my friend link to select yarn colors and she came back to me with her choice: Candy, Lipstick, Ivory, Rose, Lilac, Orange and Moss in Premier Natural Cotton  4 ply.  I bought 7 skeins in each color and it took me a bit of thinking to combine all the colors together, because I had more colors to work with and not like it was suggested in pattern.

It was fun and easy project, just one thing that isn’t fun when you use so many colors … you end up with loads of threads to knot & hide! So I’m WaRnInG  You,  there is a price to pay if you choose too many colors … but I guess its all worth it. Look at my final result…

Wrap around crochet bracelet – Free pattern

~ Wrap around crochet bracelet tutorial/pattern by Yuli ~ Free to share

You will need:

  • DK mercerized cotton – I used Elle Premier Cotton;

  • 3,5 mm crochet hook;

  • 170 medium beads;

  • button;

  • needle;

  • tapestry needle (for weaving in ends)

Tip for threading beads on to the yarn:

I split yarn in half and tread it into needle from opposite direction, this makes threading easier.

Push beads along the yarn; picking them up and use them as you crochet along.

Step 1 – Chain 2.

Step 2 – insert hook under 2 loops of the 1st chain. Yarn over.

Step 3 – Pull yarn through 2 loops of the 1st chain

Step 4 – Yarn over and pull through 1 loop.

Step 5 – Push 1 bead close to hook, yarn over and pull through 2 loops on the hook.

Your bead will be placed at the back of your work

Step 6 – insert hook under base chain (2 loops)

Step 7 – Yarn over, pull through 2 loops of base chain

 Step 8 – Yarn over and pull through 1 loop.

Step 9 – Push 1 bead close to hook, yarn over and pull through 2 loops on the hook.

Your bead will be placed at the back of your work

Repeat step 6 – 9 with rest of your beads

This is how your work looks like on other side

After you finish with all of your beads, repeat step 6-9 with out using bead x 1 time.

Turn you work around (beads side) and slip stitch along base chains.

At the end of this side – chain 7 for a button loop and slip stitch along other side of base chain.

After you slip stitch to the end of this side, cut yarn + allowing enough thread for sewing button. Weave ends with tapestry needle.

Bracelet ready.  Have fun … Love, Yuli xx

Last day of summer holidays…

Today been last day of school holidays… I can’t believe that 5 weeks flew by. I’m going to miss late morning and routine free days…

Tomorrow is the beginning of 6AMs rises, lunch boxes, driving, waiting, homework and all of that back to school business. But on the bright side…we still have great weather for afternoon beach & walks and of course more creative time for me!

Kids school bags packed, uniform all clean & ready, hair been cut, bathed, bedtime story read and they nicely tucked in beds…Phew!

I’m almost finished in the kitchen… just need to bake 2 loaf of Ciabatta for boys lunch…it was an order ;) P.S. – I’m not super woman))) I have bread machine ;). It helps a lot.

So while bread in the oven…I have time to catch up with my blog and share something with you.

Few months ago I went to building store to buy some stuff for Peter and rustic looking yarn/rope caught my eye… and it was only R10 a ball. Yes, please.

It was lying in my stash basket and I couldn’t think of anything I could do with it. And during summer siesta time I looked at my stash and Ta Da…I knew what I want to do this this yarn… It will make perfect summer sling bag with bright flowers. It took me 2 day (well, I meant 2 siestas) to make it.

I post this picture on FB page and got so many likes and complement…thank you.

It had such a positive feedback, so I would like to give something in return – my Free  Sling bag pattern. Enjoy!

I didn’t include flower patterns, I thought you would like to do your own thing… just let your creativity flow ;) Possibilities are endless…
